I'm Headed to Dental School!

Last time that I wrote an update on my journey towards becoming a dentist, I had just taken the DAT and sent in my application. A lot has happened since then and I'm not at the end of the application-admission process!

December 2nd was a crazy day! It started out with a night full of interrupted sleep! I kept waking up and having a hard time falling back asleep. I was so excited to hear back from the schools that I applied to that I was having a hard time settling down. I was also having bad dreams that I slept all day and missed the calls entirely. I would play through an entire day in a short little dream, wake up quickly and panicked, only to realize I had been sleeping for less than a half hour!

I woke up at 8:15 am with a call from The University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry! I had gotten in! I was super excited to get the call that early in the morning! What a great start to the day, even though I was nearly 100% certain that I would get in because I was in the 7-year accelerated dental program. What I really was looking forward to was hearing back from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

I went through my classes for the day, Biostats and Biochemistry, and still no calls from the University of Michigan. For some reason, in my head I was thinking that they called alphabetically. If they hadn't called me in the morning, then they wouldn't call right?! I did know for certain that if they didn't call you on December 2nd, then you had to wait until around end of February to hear if you got in. I was getting a little worried to say the least. In addition to that, I had a friend who has a last name way later in the alphabet than I receive a call earlier in the day. Yeah, I was worried.

So there I was, in line to get a quesadilla from the cafeteria at school. I was scrolling through my phone while I waited for my food to be done and a call popped up on my phone. The area code was 734 and I didn't recognize the number. I knew it had to be Michigan.

I actually yelled out, "It's Michigan!" and ran out of the cafeteria leaving my quesadilla behind. I answered the call and moved to somewhere quiet where I could hear what they had to say. I had received a place in the University of Michigan School of Dentistry Class of 2024!

So in the end, I had applied to two schools. Detroit Mercy and University of Michigan. I had gotten interviews at both and received a seat in both of the schools. I was so excited! At this point, I had the option to choose which school to go to. I knew right away that I wanted to go to Michigan. It's the top rated dental school in the United States, as well as in the top three dental schools on the planet. How could I turn that down!? I can also live in Ann Arbor and go to dental school for the cost of tuition alone at Detroit Mercy. At the end of the day, I will be saving around $160,000 by going to Michigan for dental school. I can't wait to be part of the future leaders of dentistry by going to U of M!

I'm so grateful for my time at Detroit Mercy and my Jesuit and Mercy education, but it's time that I take what I've learned here and move to another institution, where I can live out what I learned at Detroit Mercy and do great things. I'm so excited to announce that I will be going to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry starting in June of 2020!
