My First Sermon
The week before I left for the next school year, I was given the privilege of giving the sermon at Church. I had known that I would be giving the sermon since before I had even started studying for my DAT. Because I knew for so long, I had the ability to simply sit and reflect on the lectionary passages for that Sunday. The four readings were:
- Hosea 11:1-11
- Psalm 107:1-9, 43
- Colossians 3:1-11
- Luke 12:13-21
I also had some commentaries available to me about the four different lectionary readings. I think that was extremely helpful in crafting my sermon. It brought thoughts to my mind that I'm not sure would have come up as easily without reading it first.
What I really had to work through before creating my sermon was "what exactly is my role in giving a sermon?" I know that I am surely no expert in the texts we read from the lectionary. Can I bring something to the table in the form of something new?
After struggling with the idea of what I'm supposed to do, I came upon the realization that I should be creating something that communicates a message to those in the congregation, along with speaking something almost poetic. This is the mindset that I had when creating my sermon. This is something that I can do!
Below is a button that leads to the recording of my sermon! Included in the recording is Luke 12:12-21 being read, but it may help to read the first three readings before listening!
